21 Jan – We waited all day, anxiously. We waited for good news that the flagship had been repaired. That news never came.
22 Jan – Number of days without the flagship: 4. Number of days I’ve been confronted by my new neti pot, in its unwrapped packaging: 4.
Leah, my wife, has been encouraging me to try a neti pot for a couple years now. Ten days ago, Rolf picked one up while we were in Ely. At the time, I remarked to Leah, “I suppose if Rolf can do it, so can I.” I thought my display of interest had come too late. The next morning we flew to Isle Royale.
However, on the re-supply flight that arrived on Tuesday, Leah had put together a wonderful little care package, some chocolates, a new winter cap, and a neti pot!
Okay, apparently ancient yogis used neti pots to clear their nasal passages for the best possible breathing experience while meditating on the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, or some such thing. But for four days, I’d been wondering, what attraction there could possibly be in daily exposure to the risk of drowning oneself in half cup of water. Being deprived of what I really wanted – to fly and count wolves – allowed my thoughts to become too regularly invaded by that little green pot sitting on my dresser. All right, today was the day.
Well you know, it wasn’t that bad. A little strange at first, but really quite refreshing.
23 Jan – For each of the past few days we’ve found evidence of a lone wolf hanging around the harbor area. It has been digging through the snow to eat apples from this past fall that had since become half rotten and frozen.
Went skiing today – it warm enough that on my return trip, snow fleas had invaded my ski tracks.
Late in the day, we got the call. The Flagship had been repaired. She was ready to fly. Now all we need is weather that’ll allow Don to fly back. That’s not likely to happen until two days of rain pass.
NOTE: A reader had asked, where on Isle Royale is our base camp. It is located at Windigo, which is near the base Washington Harbor. The location is shown on the map below. Thanks for asking!
